Drotsky's Cabins is a privately owned lodge near Shakawe in the far North Western corner of Botswana. The lodge is famous for its excellent birding and fishing. The vegetation along the Western Panhandle of the Okavango Delta is evergreen and very thick. The best time to visit Drotsky's is from August to October when the Barbel run takes place and when the summer birds arrive.
Drotsky’s Cabins (S18 24.871 E21 53.139) is just the place to visit if you love fishing and/or birding. It’s a family business in the Okavango Delta and the owners are extremely knowledgeable about the animal and plant life in the area. The six A-frame chalets are simple, clean and comfortable, and exude the charm of years gone by. The bar is also frequented by locals, so you are guaranteed to hear some fascinating stories about the Shakawe region. The famous Barbel run takes place sometime during August to October, so book early if you want to experience this phenomenon.
Lawdons Lodge is a luxury lodge in Shakawe and the sister establishment of Drotsky’s Cabins. Lawdons is situated in the western panhandle region of the Okavango Delta – a region famous for prolific wildlife, birds and fish. Here the river contains seventeen species of fish, especially tigerfish and bream. The ten luxury cabins and the restaurant area have been built on stilts, so if the annual floods occur the Lodge is surrounded by water. The cabins are set among indigenous thorn trees, all en suite and equipped with air-conditioners, satellite TV and double bed.

Once you are in the Caprivi you can just as well visit nearby Zimbabwe and the VICTORIA FALLS. This is just 4 hours drive from Drotsky's Cabins and three hours from the Okavango Delta. Once you are in Victoria Falls there will be a wide selection of very good lodges and activities to choose from. Nearer to Drotsky's is the Chobe Game Reserve. You will drive through Chobe in order to go to Zimbabwe. While in Chobe and Kasane you could just as well try one of the famous lodges which you can book at Chobe Lodge hotel and other accommodation. SENYANTI LODGE or SENYATI SAFARI LODGE near Kasane in Botswana is a perfect destinations for families, less then three hours from Drotsky's Cabins. If you want to stay even nearer to Drotsky's Cabins try for affordable accommodation. Chobe Safari Lodge offers luxury accommodation in Kasane at the border of Chobe Game Reserve.
On the other side of the Okavango Delta and less then an hours flight with a light aircraft from Shakawe and Drotsky's Cabins, is the wildlife area of the Okavango Delta. On this eastern side of the Okavango Delta is a selection of very good lodges and excellent safaris available at Okavango and Moremi lodges. If you drive from Drotsky's Cabins to Moremi you will most likely stay in a lodge such as Thamlakane River Lodge near MAUN before visiting the Okavango Delta. You can also get a 4x4 or Landcrusier from Temba Car Hire your vehicle hire specialist in Maun. People who want to visit the Gweta Makgadigadi area can book there lodge here. Further to the east and about six hours drive with you hired car from Drotsky's lies Nata. Nata Lodge lies on the edge of the Makgadigadi Pans in Botswana and is the gateway to the Okavango Delta and Chobe.
However if you drive from Drotsky's Cabins to Serowe or Gaborone you will most likely overnight in Woodlands self-catering ( self contained ) near Francistown, or at the famous Khama Rhino Sanctuary near Serowe. Both lodges offer self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation and are about 7 hours drive from Drotsky's Cabins.
If you plan to fly out of the country you will need to make your way from Drotsky's Cabins to Gaborone the capital of Botswana. In Gaborone you can choose between lodges such as Cresta Lodge Gaborone in the CBD, The Big Five Lodge which is ten minutes from the Gaborone CBD or Mokolodi Lodge self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation just 12 km from Gaborone.
From Drotsky's Cabins you can drive south to Ghanzi, the gatewaHlahari Arm Kasotel and the game lodge Thakadu Lodge with comfortable accommodation and camping on a safari farm south of y of the Kalahari. Here you can choose from a selection of lodges at Ghanzi accommodation. Among them is the luxyur Ghanzi and 5 hours drive from Drotsky's Lodge and Shakawe.
Once in Ghanzi you have two choices. You can drive to Kang 7 hours from Drotsky's Cabins and stay in e the best accommodation along the Central Kgalagadi Highway between Johannesburg and Shakawe. Or you can go to Namibia and its capital Windhoek. Windhoek is about 9 hours from Drotsky's. There is a good selection of lodges to choose from at Windhoek Accommodation. Among them is Arebbusch self-catering ( self contained ) lodge just south of the city.
If you decide to go via Kang you will eventually reach the South African Bordrn Cape Province of South Africa. Upington is 11 hours drive from Shakawe but Upington accommodation will provideer about 8 hours after you have left Drotsky Cabins in Shakawe. You can stay in the Kalahari and visit Upington in the Northe you with good accommodation. We offer a selection of the best accommodation based on value for money. The Kalahari Sun River Lodge is a boutique hotel in Upington while the Upington Country Lodge offers excellent self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation in Upington. The Kalahari Monate Lodge is best for self-catering ( self contained ) or camping 10 km from Upington on the Spitskop Nature Reserve. Still in the Northern Cape but much further from Shakawe and Drotsky's and the Okavango Delta is Britstown. In Britstown you can choose between Transkaroo Lodge in the main street or Kambro Lodge.
In sharp contrast with the high rainfall area around Shakawe and Drotsky's and the massive Okavanago Delta lies the dry Colesberg area in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Merino Inn Motel is just oudside Colesberg on the N1. This is a three star hotel and is the perfect stopover between Drotsky's Cabins and the Eastern Cape. Gables Inn self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation in Colesberg is an alternative. If you are on your way to Cape Town consider a lodge in Hanover, South Africa. Hanover Inn offers affordable but very basic accommodation in Hanover, South Africa. If you need more luxury Hanover Lodge Bed and Breakfast might be the answer.
Drotsky's Cabins is a romantic destination and perfect for fishing. So is Amazian Mountain River Lodge near Underberg in the Drakensberg mountains. Here every night turns out to be a honeymoon. During the day you can do some fishing, just as in the Okavango Delta.
Not only the Okavango Delta and Drotsky's cabins is perfect for both birding and fishing. The Transkei Wildcoast in the Eastern Cape in South Africa offers sea fisherman what the Okavango Delta does for freshwater fishermen. On your way from Shakawe to the Wildcoast you will need to overnight in Umtata Savoy Hotel your hotel in Mthatha or Umtata. The next stop will be a Wildcoast fishing and birding paradise such as or Ntaba River Lodge near Port St Johns. If birding is not your priority but you want to do some fishing why not go to the Namibian coast after your visit to Drotsky's. There are few place where fishing is better than at Swakopmund. You can choose your lodge at Swakopmund Accommodation. From Swakopmund you can visit the high dunes of Sossusvlei. This is not only far from Drotsky's Cabins but very different. The Namib Desert has very high dunes near Soussusvlei.
